TASK 3 (Development & Design)
Module Information (MI)
Module Assessment Tasks Document
I. Recap
In Task 3, I am required to further develop one of my selected ideas from Task 2 and transform it into a final design outcome. This process involves refining the concept through the application of design principles such as colour, composition, typography, and visual hierarchy.
I need to explore and improve my idea step by step, ensuring that the design communicates a clear message and demonstrates a strong understanding of design principles. After finalising the design, I am also required to present it in A4 size with proper resolution, include a caption, and write a rationale explaining my design decisions, the meaning behind the work, and the principles applied.
Additionally, I need to include feedback from my lecturer and reflect on how it has influenced my final outcome.
II. Final Choose of Idea
For this design, I decided to further develop my pencil sketch idea of Climbing as it best reflects the concept of unity inspired by United – The United Nations Fight for Freedom. I scanned my hand-drawn sketch and refined it digitally in Photoshop by separating elements such as the characters, flag, mountains, and sky into different layers. This allowed me to adjust composition, scale, and positioning more precisely to achieve a clearer and more dynamic visual structure.
The main message of this design is “leave no one behind,” which emphasises teamwork, support, and collective perseverance. The climbers are shown helping each other in harsh snowy conditions, symbolising that success can only be achieved when people work together and overcome challenges as a group.
Several design principles are applied in this work. Movement is created through the flowing flag and diagonal climbing direction, guiding the viewer’s eye upward. Harmony and unity are reflected in the interaction between the characters, showing cooperation. The red flag acts as a symbol of victory and hope, while the combination of bold Word and Image reinforces the message clearly and effectively.
Feedback
Based on the feedback from my lecturer, I was advised to reduce the scale of the main subject in my design to allow more space for the background sky, creating a better sense of openness and visual balance. In response, I adjusted the composition by slightly lowering and resizing the characters, which helped to enhance the overall spatial depth and made the scene feel less crowded.
Additionally, I was guided to improve the typography by refining the font size and colour to create a clearer visual hierarchy. I emphasised the key words by adjusting their scale and using contrasting colours, allowing the message to be more direct and easily understood at first glance.
Furthermore, I paid attention to maintaining consistency in text formatting within each paragraph, ensuring that font sizes are not mixed unnecessarily. This helps improve readability and keeps the overall presentation clean and professional.
